Students will further their playing ability and musical knowledge by participating in the full ensemble, small groups, and/or chamber groups
Students will increase their skill and comprehension levels as musicians by understanding and working toward mastery of various musical concepts including, but not limited to, posture, breath control, embouchure structure, specific instrument background information, and technical facility (i.e., scales, articulation, rhythmic accuracy, sight reading and singing, terminology, interpretation, form and style). These improvements will be monitored in class, but require outside practice to master.
Students will be evaluated through various methods, including playing quizzes, verbal comprehension questions (in class), written work, teacher feedback and coaching in class, and performances outside of class time.
Students are requested to maintain decorum as they work toward individual skill enhancement, comprehension, group progress, and performance readiness. Students should use class time to their best possible advantage - concentrate, make a positive contribution, study music when waiting for rehearsal to move on, etc. Individual learning styles will vary. Students will be evaluated on the basis of progress from their starting point. The goal is to progress as far as possible toward the written objective of the day.

::
Have the family member present him/herself to the director at the event before taking the student. A student can leave only with a parent, relative, or guardian.

Administrative supervision is provided at all home school activities. Please help us by picking up your child in a timely manner. If you have an unforeseen delay in picking up your child, please make every effort to arrange an alternate ride home. You can call the band room (703-922-0465) and leave a message at any time. Your child's safety and well being is a primary concern to all of us at Hayfield

No student will drive him/herself to a performance, competition, clinic or other duly sanctioned school activity that is not at Hayfield, unless he or she has been given permission by the director and the principal and completed appropriate paperwork. This permission will be granted only in extreme circumstances.

Color Guard
  Throughout the school year, rehearsals will be scheduled as necessary for performances at football games, basketball games, indoor guard competitions, and the spring trip.
