September 14, 2004 :: Band Fund Raiser Information

This year's first of two fund raisers is a sale of candy and other items through the Great American Company. We depend on our two fund raisers to pay for a number of things that make our program successful, including music, supplies, and clinicians, to name a few. Our representative from Great American will go over the details of the program with the students on Tuesday, September 14, and other arrangements will be make to introduce students to the program on Wednesday, September 15.

Here's how it works:

1) Students receive product catalogs on September 14 and 15. (Students not at school on this date may pick up catalogs on at any time.)

2) Students show catalogs to customers and take orders for products. NO MONEY IS TAKEN AT THAT TIME! WAIT UNTIL PRODUCTS ARE DELIVERED TO CUSTOMERS BEFORE TAKING MONEY!

3) Students turn in orders to the band mailbox in Mr. Helm's office by Thursday, September 30.

4) On November 4, the products are scheduled to arrive. Participating students will

receive their orders, along with labeled envelopes in which to collect money.

Students are to check to make sure that all of the ordered products are delivered.

The Great American Company takes pride in its ability to fix products quickly, so it is. Important to notify Mr. Helm of any problems as soon as possible.

5) Deliver items to customers and put checks (made out to Hayfield Band Boosters)

In the envelopes provided. Be sure that the amount in the envelope matches the amount on the label. NO CASH will be accepted. Parents should collect any cash given to students and write ONE check for the amount of cash collected. Seal the envelope and turn it in to the band booster mailbox in Mr. Helm's office. DO NOT turn in envelopes while a substitute teacher is teaching the class. STUDENTS WILL HAVE TWO WEEKS TO TURN IN MONEY ENVELOPES! The deadline for the money at be returned is Friday, November 19.

6) In late November, an after-school party will be held for all the students selling

fifteen or more items. Students who have not turned in their money envelopes will not be allowed to participate in the prize giveaway. Prizes will be delivered to eligible students. Also, a percentage of the profit from each sale will be used toward the seller's Hershey Trip account.

GOOD LUCK!

September 08, 2004 :: Percussion Class Announcement

Dear band students and parents,

Percussion students in Fairfax County Public Schools are expected to learn a variety of instruments, including mallet keyboard instruments, auxiliary percussion instruments, timpani and snare drum. In order for all band students to begin the year prepared to participate in class, I would like to take a moment to clarify the equipment expectations and responsibilities for percussion students.

Beginning students may rent the following from a local music store:

-A percussion kit, with 2 ½ octave concert bells, a snare drum, a practice pad, sticks, mallets, stand, and carrying case.

Estimated purchase cost………………. $375-500

Rental cost…………………………….. $100-200

Students in intermediate and advanced bands do not need this kit in order to participate in band. It is, however, strongly recommended for those who are not able to practice after hours on the school mallet instruments. Students wishing to pursue mallet percussion in-depth should consider the purchase of a keyboard percussion instrument. Local music stores do not rent marimbas, xylophones, or vibraphones.

Intermediate and advanced percussion students participating in band classes are expected to have the following (See "Percussion Details Sheet" for specific brands and models):

Required:

1) At least one pair of "concert band" drumsticks, preferably two

or three pair during the course of the year……………. $6-13

2) One pair of bell and/or keyboard percussion mallets……… $21-41

3) A stick bag…………………………………………………. $15-25

Estimated purchase cost…………………………………………..….$42-79

Strongly encouraged:

1) A heavy-duty practice pad

2) A metronome, electronic, with a light

3) Large drum sticks, designed for marching band playing, to develop finger and arm coordination

Additional recommendations (for more advanced students):

1) Timpani mallets

2) Keyboard mallets for various textures, including cord-wound, yarn-wound, gum rubber, soft/medium/hard rubber, etc.

Students and parents should be aware that drumsticks and mallets have limited lifetimes, so proper care of items is essential. In order to prevent loss due to misplacement or theft, all sticks, mallets and bags must be marked with the student's name.

Additionally, there is an equipment usage fee of $26 per semester to cover the use of school percussion equipment. This fee covers the cost of maintaining instruments due to the wear and tear of frequent use, and does not cover damage due to student misuse, vandalism or neglect. Students may use the percussion instruments at school only, as they are shared by all Hayfield percussionists.

Equipment usage fee…………………………………………………….$26

Here is a list of the instruments used by students at Hayfield:
