Congratulations to the Symphonic Band for their excellent ratings at Sandburg band festival this past
wekend. Symphonic also received a superior rating for sight reading, which was truly outstanding!

to the Drum Line on their First Place showing at the Thomas Jefferson High School Drum Line Competition. High marks went to
the mallets on their fantastic performance.
Hayfield All State auditioners
Adam Labriny, Katie Taylor and Jon Russell went to JMU this weekend to vie for spots in the all state bands.The
competition was tough, and they did not earn spots. THey did have impressive showings, and are officially some
of the top players in the state of Virginia. THey are our shining stars. Congratulations!

ALL-DISTRICT
BAND AUDITION TIMES (From the audition host) The time indicated on
the sheet is the half-hour time span that the student should be ready to audition, therefore they must allow
time before then to register and warm-up. The registration desk will open at 8:30 AM. At the registration desk, students will
receive their audition number and further instructions.

Re HS Flutes/Piccolos, HS & MS Clarinets, and
HS Trumpets: please make sure your students know their auditions will be split into two rooms, with one room listening to
major scales and the prepared etude, and the other room listening to the chromatic scale and the sight reading. HS Percussion
is in four rooms (two judges in the prepared room this year), MS Percussion is in three rooms.
High school folks: percussionists
will be allowed 90 seconds total in the timpani room to both look over the sight-reading and tune the three and
only three drums which will be needed. This will be enforced. ALSO - a new thought for this year - I don't think we
need rudiments that last two minutes each. Maybe 30 seconds or so, tops? Please tell your kids; we're really trying to
get percussion moving faster this year and that will help. Remember to point your students
to raiderband.org - a lot of very helpful information is available there, including directions to the school.

V.B.O.D.A.-The rain, wind and cold put a damper on
the show, as we performed under extreme conditions on Saturday. The students gave it all they had and for that we are very proud
of them. The ratings ended up being solid III's, and under the circumstances, it was the hardest earned, gut-checking,
falling down, a quart-and-a-half-of-water-in-your-sousaphone, playing-your-drum-like-blue-man-group, 3-pound-flag-becomes-10-pounds-soaking-wet-in-the-wind, slipping
and sliding rating I will ever be the most proud of.

August 2008 Schedule for the week: August
11-14, Monday-Friday , 5pm-8pm marching band rehearsals.

Marching Band Members, Thursday, August 21, 2008 the marching band is invited to swim at the Hayfield Farms pool, from 5-8pm. We
will provide pizza and sodas. We ask that each student bring $2.00 for the pizza, and
also bring a dessert to share. Please pick up your child on Thursday night at the pool at 8pm. The pool is at the end of Hayfield
Road, in the Hayfield Farms subdivision. On Friday, August 22, 2008, the Marching band will
be holding our annual “exhibition and pot luck supper” to be held here at the school at 6pm. The Marching band
will perform the 2008 show, then have everyone move into the middle school cafeteria for a pot luck supper. We ask that you
bring a dish to share. The boosters will provide sodas and paper products and utensils. Last names

MAY 27-JUNE 6 The calendar above has been modified to reflect the new closing date of
the school year. Rehearsals and performances are the same, with the exception of the senior awards on June 10, which has been
cancelled. Students will report for the concert at 6:00pm on June 3rd.
April 14-18
Jazz Band is suspended for the duration of the spring musical, as
most of the jazz students have become the musical pit orchestra. We will continue in May.

marching band performed this past Saturday at the Virginia Band & Orchestra Directors Association’s annual Marching
band festival in Haymarket.
The
marching band performed for 5 adjudicators, and received the highest award for a “superior” performance.
This
caps a great season of marching with competition trophies, accolades of great sound & motion and a superior rating from
the virginia’s highest school music authority.
