Patrick Burke :: Director of Bands

Patrick Burke has been at Hayfield since 1988 serving as the director and instructor of the Marching Band, Wind Ensemble,
Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Music Theory and middle school classes such as Beginning Percussion Cadet Band and General Music.
After-school ensembles have included Jazz Band, Pep Band, Pit Orchestra and Full Orchestra. Mr. Burke is a graduate of The University of Tennessee in Knoxville with a bachelor's degree, and George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia with
a masters. The Hayfield Bands have performed at such events as the Virginia Music Educators Convention, and W.E.T.A.
radio's "Outstanding Young Artists in our Community" concert. The bands have also performed in such venues as riverside
church in New york City, and the concert stage at The Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. Mr. Burke has received commendations
from the National Band Directors Association, The Virginia Band and Orchestra Association, and is the recipient of the
"Hawk Award" from Hayfield Secondary School. Mr. Burke has served as the vice president of the Fairfax County Band Directors
Association, and as the District Ten representative to the Virgina Band and Orchestra Directors Association. He has served
as a clinician and adjudicator to concert festivals across the northeast. Mr. Burke lives in Lorton,Virginia with his wife
and two children. |

Dan Helm is the middle school director at Hayfield, teaching Symphonic Band,
Concert Band, Beginning Band, middle school Percussion Ensemble, the high school Advanced Percussion Ensemble, and high school
Marching Band. At Hayfield since 1995, Mr. Helm also has after school groups such as a middle school jazz band and various
small ensembles. Originally from Seattle, Washington, he graduated from George Mason University with High Distinction. In 1991, he began teaching in Fairfax County, and is
presently the V.M.E.A. District X chairman. Dan Helm has composed and published a number of snare solos,
and has composed marching percussion music for bands throughout Northern Virginia. In May 1999, he was honored by his Hayfield
peers with the Crystal City/Pentagon Rotary Club "Teacher of The Year" award, and in 2003 he was nominated for the Robert R.
Spillane Leadership Award.
